introduction
Gurnos' Graduates
Six local women attended a special graduation event at Cyfarthfa Castle on 12th July 2007 to celebrate their achievements as part of the Life Support Programme. This innovative, community based learning programme has shown that with the right support, people who left school with few or no qualifications can make a successful return to learning and get the qualifications they need to go on to study further and enter careers in the field of health and social care.
Life Support gives people with no qualifications a second chance to go "back to school" and get the qualifications that they now wish they had studied for when they were younger.
But this is no ordinary school. As well as the usual tutor support around learning and study skills, it was noted that people needed far more help in the form of phsyco/social support to make a successful return to the classroom and enable them to commit to their studies whilst also coping with the very real and challenging issues they deal with everyday.
